Public Forum: Nurses and Midwives deserve better

When: Saturday 16 May, 1:30pm

Location: Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre - Level 1/405 Crown St, Surry Hills NSW 2010

Hear from nurse, union activist and NSW Socialists member Declan Maher about the atrocious IRC decision that entrenches low pay for NSW nurses and midwives, and why the union needs to fight the Minns government for a real pay increase.

The supposedly “historic” pay rise granted to NSW nurses and midwives by the Industrial Relations Commission will actually leave workers poorer than they were in 2020 in real terms, and significantly lower paid than nurses in other states. This is an insult from the Minns government to the workers who keep our underfunded healthcare system afloat. Meanwhile the commissioner Ingmar Taylor who presented this decision makes a base salary of $497,000.

Thousands of nurses and midwives across NSW have shown a willingness to strike against the Minns government, yet the NSWNMA union leadership wound down its strike campaign to abide by the rules of a rigged arbitration process, which has now delivered this outrageous judgment. Socialists in the union believe the fight must continue. A serious campaign of strikes is needed to cause a political crisis for the Minns government and win nurses the pay and conditions they deserve.

All nurses, midwives and supporters are welcome.
