End homophobia and transphobia
The far right are waging a war against LGBTQIA+ people. They want to undo the progress made on LBGTQIA+ rights. In particular, trans people are targeted and scapegoated for the ills of society. In the face of this, we need to eliminate the exemptions to legislation that allow discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people in employment, education and the provision of services. We need to make free and accessible gender-affirming healthcare, and protect those pro-trans programs and services that are under threat from bigots. We cannot allow homophobia or transphobia any space in our society.
We’ll fight for
- Remove exemptions in NSW anti-discrimination law that allow private educational institutions and religious organisations to discriminate against LGBTQIA+ people in employment, education and the provision of services.
- Massively expand specialist crisis, transitional and long-term public housing for LGBTQIA+ young people
- Fully fund free, accessible and gender-affirming health care through the NSW public health system, including for trans and gender-diverse young people, and expand services to eliminate long waiting lists and regional barriers.
- Guarantee safe and affirming public health services for LGBTQIA+ people across NSW, including specialist sexual health, mental health, reproductive health and regional services.
- Properly fund and enforce the NSW Conversion Practices Ban Act, including strong investigation powers, accessible support and legal assistance for survivors, and action against organisations that continue to engage in conversion or suppression practices.
- Guarantee inclusive, age-appropriate sexuality, consent and gender education in every NSW school, with proper training and resources for teachers, and defend inclusive education against attempts by the right and religious lobby groups to remove it.
- End medically unnecessary interventions on intersex children without their consent. Procedures altering a child’s sex characteristics should be performed only where immediately medically necessary to prevent serious harm; otherwise they should be delayed until the individual can provide informed consent.
- Fund specialist LGBTQIA+ services for older people and require all state-funded health, housing and community-care services to meet strong standards for LGBTIQ+ inclusion.
- Make it easier for trans and gender-diverse children to amend their birth certificates. Remove the requirement to obtain the agreement of every named parent or go through the District Court where a parent is absent, estranged, uncontactable or refusing consent contrary to the child’s interests. These hurdles remain for under-18s.
- Strengthen anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender-diverse and intersex people.
- Oppose every attempt by One Nation, the Liberals or other right-wing forces to restrict gender-affirming care, attack trans people, remove inclusive education from schools or wind back LGBTQIA+ rights.
